Building Trust Within Affected Communities

The CEAL team's approach to involving the community in pandemic response and vaccine distribution and research helps build trust within the communities hit hardest by COVID-19, leading to more effective and equitable outcomes.

The COVID-19 pandemic has devastatingly impacted communities of color in the United States, with higher rates of illness, hospitalization, and death than White communities have experienced. This impact has been particularly stark in Georgia, where over 18,000 people have died from the virus. Black people, Hispanics/Latinos, American Indians, and Alaska Natives are about twice as likely as White people to die from COVID-19 nationwide.

CEAL Team's Community-centered Approach

The CEAL team's approach includes several key features and benefits to effectively address disparities caused by COVID-19 in communities of color.

One reason for the lower vaccination rates in communities of color is mistrust and hesitancy about the vaccine and vaccine research. This mistrust is deeply rooted in Black, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, and Alaska Native communities, and it is important for health care workers to understand the past and current issues that affect these communities in order to learn how people make informed choices about vaccines and participation in vaccine trials.

Delivering Access to Information

The CEAL team is providing accurate and culturally-relevant information about COVID-19 and vaccines through various channels such as partnerships with community outreach workers, television and radio programs, and online listening sessions.

This means that the activities of the Georgia CEAL team are developed with participation from community leaders, local service providers, local residents, and others. This approach is important for building trust within the communities hit hardest by COVID-19.
